Bright Futures Finally Caught Up!

Bright Futures Scholarship 2026 Update

Text on a purple-pink gradient reads: "AP Capstone now qualifies for Florida Bright Futures, Class of 2026." Mood is informative.
Florida Bright Futures AP Capstone

Let’s be honest—this update was long overdue. While AICE and IB students have been on track to meet Bright Futures eligibility requirements without submitting SAT or ACT scores, AP students have been taking a longer route. But finally, starting with the Class of 2026, the AP Capstone diploma has officially been added as a new pathway to qualify for the Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) award. And yes—no SAT or ACT required for this route.

Here’s what families need to know:

What is AP Capstone?

AP Capstone is a diploma program from College Board that includes AP Seminar and AP Research. It’s designed to build strong research, collaboration, and presentation skills—skills colleges love to see.

What's New?

Students who earn the AP Capstone diploma—along with specific AP coursework—can now qualify for the Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) award, the top tier of Bright Futures, without submitting ACT or SAT scores.

Course Requirements for This Pathway:

To be eligible through the AP Capstone route, students must complete:

  • AP Seminar

  • AP Research

  • One AP course in Math or Science

  • One AP course in English

  • One AP course in Art, History, or Social Sciences

  • One additional AP course of their choice

Other Important Notes:

  • AP Capstone does not replace the standard high school diploma

  • Students must still meet the required GPA and service hours (or approved work hours)

  • Students must submit the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) by the deadline to be considered

When Does This Start?

This change applies to students graduating in the 2025–2026 school year and beyond.

Don’t Miss These Deadlines:

  • May 15 – for Bright Futures eligibility in Fall/Spring

  • November 1 – for Spring/Summer funding

💬 Talk to Your Counselor:

Make sure your counselor knows you’re aiming for the AP Capstone route and that you’re checking all the Bright Futures boxes. Don’t assume—ask questions and get that plan in writing if you need to.

✨ Final Thought from Mrs. Orris:

This change is a win for students who thrive in project-based learning and research. If you’re more of a deep diver than a test-taker, this route could be your golden ticket. So celebrate the update, plan your courses wisely, and don’t forget those deadlines. The glow-up is in the details.
